October 1993 - An assessment of the impact media coverage has had on the war in Somalia. American stomachs were turned by pictures of mutilated American soldiers dragged through the streets. American troops were quickly ordered home. Not so widely seen pictures of an American attack on a meeting house prompted a similar about-turn in Somali public opinion. Minutes after the attack four journalists were hacked to death by furious mobs. Ahmed Hassan, the man who made the video, tells how he was surprised by the effect his video had on the fighting. Somalis now taunt UN tanks by parking their cars in front of them and some fear that when the UN finally goes home there will be no media left in Somalia to turn World public opinion. Celebrity social media push to help Somalia goes viral. The actor Ben Stiller and a group of his friends have harnessed the power of social media to raise more than a million dollars for starving Somalis in just 24 hours. They've started a campaign, called Love Army for Somalia, which asked Turkish Airlines - the only company that flies directly to the country - to fill a cargo flight full of food and send it over. The airline agreed, saying it would be proud to be part of the cause. The American Refugee Committee will help distribute the aid. It's just two days since they launched the appeal on the Go Fund Me website, where the donated total has passed more than one and a half million dollars. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https:/...

The first public meeting on Somali's media law was held on Wednesday, in the capital Mogadishu. It follows criticism by local media that the draft law curbs press freedom. The United Nations human rights office had also expressed concern at the demand for journalists to reveal their sources, which it said could prevent them from publishing information deemed by the state as anti-Islam or against Somali traditions. Somalia is one of the most dangerous countries in Africa to practice journalism. Last year 18 journalists were killed, and 6 have died this year.
